Residential waste in The Netherlands is managed by the municipality. This means Rotterdam will manage the trash collection day and will make known the location of bulk waste disposal and of recycling spots. Therefore, if you have any doubts or problems regarding trash you can always check the website of Rotterdam’s municipality. This link also indicates the location of the different types of waste containers in Rotterdam such as organic waste, glass, paper, among others:
Your trash can be classified into two main categories: household waste and bulky waste. The first is all the waste produced by standard daily activities that can easily fit in a bin, while the second is the waste that is not part of standard daily activities and does not fit in a bin.
Thus, when it comes to household waste, you are responsible for sorting your trash into glass recycling, paper recycling and residual waste. The municipal public cleaning department of Rotterdam will collect your residual waste once or twice a week. In most addresses, you can put your residual waste bag on the pavement in front of your house from 06:00 to 08:00 on the day of the collection. But be aware! It is not permitted to do so one day before. You can find your trash day on this website, or just ask your neighbours.
If you live in a multi-story building you will probably dispose of your waste in a collective bin. If you need to dispose of your trash on a non-collection day then you can also search for one of the many residual waste bins throughout Rotterdam. The first link of this section can help you with that!
Rotterdam also provides neighbourhood recycling containers for glass recycling and paper recycling. Batteries can be handed in at specific shops or supermarkets.
To dispose of bulk waste, you can call the municipal service number (010) 267 16 25 for it to be collected or make an online appointment. You can also dispose of it in one of Rotterdam’s Milieuparken. You can find the location of the Milieuparken here.
